Soon to be right down the street from St Mark's Inn!
Soon to be right down the street from St Mark’s Inn!

The New York Wheel will be in sight from St. Mark’s inn.  St Marks Inn

Construction is under way at the site of a $500 million Ferris wheel project along the Staten Island waterfront.

The Staten Island Advance says the 630-foot-tall observation wheel is slated to open for business in 2017.

Up to 1,400 passengers at a time will view the scenery of New York City, New Jersey and beyond during a slow-moving, 38-minute ride.

The New York Wheel project was approved by the city in 2013.

In 2017, you will be able to walk down the street from St Marks Inn, go to dinner, ride the New York Wheel, catch a Staten Island Yankees game and walk back.  Sounds like a great evening

PotterCon 2016
Pottercon 2016.

POTTERCON was awesome!  So glad we went. Great things to do in New York City!

We all had a great time here.  Earlier this month  It brings out the kid in everyone!  The biggest event for witches and wizards is here.  The St. Marks Inn loves things like this! Original Harry Potter fans might have grown up, but that doesn’t mean they have to act like it. PotterCon brings magic lovers together at Irving Plaza for a day of childish fun, including Butterbeer, costume contests and trivia. Enjoy Hogwarts-inspired activities including a live sorting with the infamous Sorting Hat, a House Cup trivia tournament and a photo booth in front of Diagon Alley’s entrance with Potter-tastic props.  Pottercon was Awesome!

Check out the Event Website to see how it went!!! http://www.potterconnyc.com  Get ready for next year.

This was a Ferry & Subway ride away from St. Marks Inn.  http://www.stmarksinn.com

2015’s PotterCon gathered almost 1,000 Hogwarts alums for a day of witchcraft and wizardry, and this year we’re swish-and-flicking our way to an even bigger and better event. So dig your dusty old robes out of storage, accio your friends and come throw back some Butterbeers with other magic-loving adults. The day promises to be 4,224 pages worth of fun… Until the very end.

The Macy’s Flower Show is today.

You could easily spend hours sniffing the aromatic blooms at this popular annual two-week floral exhibition, this year dubbed “America the Beautiful.” The ground level of Macy’s Herald Square transforms into a not-so-secret garden that’s covered in floor-to-ceiling greenery depicting the purple mountain majesties and fruited plains that we’re so, er, unaccustomed to in the concrete jungle. The Macy’s Flower Show looks fantastic and it’s going on today.  From the St Marks Inn on Staten Island, NYC, it’s just a hop onto the Ferry and onto the 1 Train and I will be there this morning!  Looks fantastic. It might not seem like it, but grabbing a cup of coffee and joining the wandering tourists on the first floor of Macy’s is actually a great date idea. The flowers are always gorgeous (especially this year – the America the Beautiful theme is timely and reminds you that there are other amazing places in the U.S. that are not NYC) and it’s perfect for relaxing or snapping a billion photos for your Instagram.  If you’re feeling adventurous, go to the 7th floor (home goods) and look for the coffee cup garden. You can get a free Nespresso drink while you’re there!

The Macy’s Flower Show is where I will be today!  Can’t wait

Arann is an interior designer with more than 30 years of experience under her belt. “We’re trying to recreate what was here but give it a much more updated, fresh feeling,” said Susan Arann, our Staten Islander of the Week. Susan Arann has big plans for the Saint George Theatre.

Now, she’s using her decorating know-how to breathe new life into the St. George Theatre’s

first-floor restrooms.

Arann says it’s easy for a designer to get lost in the building’s ornate design elements.

She says that’s why her main goal is to preserve the theater’s rich history, dating back to the 1920’s.

“It bridges the old with the new and there’s an elegance and it’s safe and it’s beautiful,” said Arann. “Finally people will walk in and say, ‘Wow!’ That’s what I wanna get.”

Arann has been working with architects and builders on the project for the last seven months.

She says it’s usually a job priced at about $20 thousand.

But for this special client she’s doing it all free of charge.

That’s big savings for a theater that relies on grants and donations.

“It’s a huge value and so important to us as a nonprofit we have to be careful how we spend our money,” said Doreen Cugno of the St. George Theatre.

Arann says a lot of work goes into a restoration project of this size, but adds that it doesn’t feel that way.

“It’s more like a dream because you’re peeling away the years and then you never know what you’re going to discover and that’s the most fascinating part of it,” she said.

And so, for preserving a piece of history for future generations to enjoy, Susan Arann is our Staten Islander of the Week.

The New York Wheel is being built right down the street from St Marks Inn!

New York Wheel promises to become one of the city’s – and the world’s – great landmark attractions, located in St. George on the New York Harbor. The New York Wheel will be transformative for the North Shore and for this borough. It is quite rare for a project to singlehandedly usher in a new day for a community, but the Wheel can. When you then combine it with the other great things that will be happening nearby, well, this is a special moment in time for Staten Island
